A bowl size alone does not identify a replacement downstem. Before choosing a part, record the connection that seats in the water pipe, the receiver that accepts the bowl, the maker’s length convention, and the clearance inside the chamber.
Quick rule: mark the replacement PASS only when both connections, the maker-defined length, and clearance are verified. Mark it HOLD when any field remains unknown.
Read paired sizes as two connections
Some makers describe a removable downstem with paired notation such as 18/14mm. In Thick Ass Glass’s current sizing guide, the first number identifies the outer connection to the water pipe and the second identifies the inner receiver for the slide or accessory. Treat that order as maker-specific unless the seller of the part you are checking defines it the same way.

Measure length with named endpoints
If the original downstem is intact, clean and remove it before measuring. When the replacement supplier uses the same convention, measure the insert length from the lower edge of the ground or frosted outer joint to the tip. Also record the units and endpoints in words. Do not substitute an end-to-end measurement unless the supplier explicitly requests total length.
Measurement labels are not universal. Thick Ass Glass defines its insert length from the lower edge of the frosted joint to the tip, while Mobius calls its dimension “working length” and measures from the bottom of the diffuser to the largest part of the outer tapered joint. Copy the replacement maker’s own definition and do not compare two length numbers until their endpoints match.
If the original is missing or broken, do not infer the downstem length from the bong’s overall height. Send the maker the exact model link, selected variant, SKU, clear photos, body-joint details, and the available chamber-clearance measurement. GRAV’s support FAQ identifies two concrete fit failures: a downstem body that will not pass through the joint opening and a stem long enough for its tip to contact the base.
